Chapter One Characters

Chapter One introduces three main characters: Mr. Jones, Moses, and Old Major. While Moses represents religion that is run by government and how the government can exploit the religion to meet its ends, Mr. Jones and Old Major each represent specific people in Russian history.

Mr. Jones represents Tsar Nicholas II
Old Major represents Karl Marx
Research a little bit about the one that you are assigned and find out about the historical person.

Share something that you found surprising about the historical person.

Something surprising:

Tsar Nicholas II and his family (his wife and children) were executed by gun shot to the head and burned in acid and then placed in a mine shaft, which was their final resting place.

Example from Chapter 1 that shows how the author felt about Mr. Jones:

You can tell that the author thinks little, or not very well of Nicholas because in the book he portrays Mr. Jones to be a drunk and seemingly a jerk.

Most accurate portrayal:

I think that the most accurate portrayal was how Mr. Jones stumbled back into the house drunk. I do not think that Tsar Nicholas the II had a problem with drinking but the way he led his country in a time of war reminds me of a drunk man. He did not seem to know what he was doing.

Karl Marx is best known not as a philosopher but as a revolutionary communist, whose works inspired the foundation of many communist regimes in the twentieth century.

He wants Old Major to come across as a strong character that everyone looks up to for answers. For instance when they had the meeting in the barn he was the speaker and no one interupted him or disagreed with him.

To me Old Major seems like a grandpa. Someone who everyone can count on and look up to no matter what the situation may be. Karl Marx was like that too. He wanted to help people and that is exactly how Old Major is.

Karl Marx is considered one of the founders of economic history and sociology.

the author shows how he feels about the character by saying he is so highly regarded on the farm. All of the animals wanted to hear what he had to say.

Old Major had a way of talking the animals into things.

Nicholas and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks in Russia.
The author refers to Mr. Jones being to drunk to remember to shut the popholes in the chicken house. He sounds irresponsible and unable to run the farm.
This happens later in the book, but Mr. Jones gets his farm taken over by the animals. This is largely due in part by the revolution started by Old Major. In comparison to this, Nicholas 2 had his rule ended after the Russian Revolution of 1917. He proved himself unable to manage a country in political turmoil

Karl Marx is best known as a revolutionary communist, whose works inspired the foundation of many communist regimes in the twentieth century.Marx's theory of history is centered around the idea that forms of society rise and fall as they further and then impede the development of human productive power.

Example from Chapter 1 that shows the authors feelings toward the character:
You can definetly see that he based the character Old Major off of Karl Marx. Because Old Major believes that humans have the power over animals because they don't have the stronger qualities animals do. The author wants Old Major to seem very wise and one of the stronger farm animals in the yard.

He got this across because none of the other animals disrespected him or interrupted him when he was giving his speech on human power and what happens when all of the animals become weak or become a certain age.

Old Major represents Karl Marx, during the 1850s lived in poverty with four children, but only three of them survived.

George Orwell makes Old Major to be a wise character. Old Major is old and knows a lot of things that the younger animals do not know. The other animals on the farm look up to him for answers.

He makes Old Major to be like Karl Marx the are nice, wise and knowledgeable.

1. Tasr Nicholas his whole family was assinatated and he did not have control over his people.
2. Mr. Jones was a drunk and the animals on his farm did not respect him.
3. The animals did not respect Mr. Jones just like Yurovsky did not respect the authority of Tsar Nicholas ll.

1 The whole family was executed, he narrowly escaped assassination in Japan when he was 23.He faced problems in Russia.
2. He was a drunk, They went behind his back, I had been agreed to meet when Mr. Jones was out of sight because they did not respect him and he did not know of a lot of things that happen.
3. Were hes crazy, he wants to kill them all.He wants to destroy Nicholas just as the animals want to destroy Mr. Jones.

Karl Marx was called the father of communism.
George Orwell stated that Old Major was very respected on the farm. He said that the animals would gladly lose an hours sleep to hear what he had to say at the meeting that night.
The most accurate portrayal is how Old Major instilled the idea of a revolution in the animal’s minds. Karl Marx came up with the idea of Marxism, which exerted major influence on workers’ movements shortly after his death. He also planted the seed for the October Revolution in Russia.

Karl Marx, is without a doubt the most influential socialist thinker to emerge in the 19th century. Marx was a philosopher, social scientist, historian and revolutionary. I find it surprising that even though he was so influential, at first, he was ignored by the scholars and people around him.

George Orwell makes Old Major to seem very wise and a very strong member of the farm.

Orwell makes it seem like all of the other animals look up to Old Major, which is very accurate since Karl Marx was so influential.

Nicholas and his family were moved to the remote Siberian city of Ekaterinburg where he was held captive by a group of Bolsheviks. Nicholas and his family were executed in July 1918.
In this chapter you can tell that Mr. Jones isn't a very liked person, by the way that he protreys him as a drunk.
The most accurate protrayal of Mr. Jones is that he isn't very nice and a drunk. By showing this he was showing how much he was disliked when he was alive. He was executed so that shows just how much he was disliked.

Karl Marx

Something I found surprising:
Karl Marx produced a 800 page book on capital, landed property, wage labor, the state, foreign trade, and the world market.

Example from Chap. that shows how the author felt about Marx:
The author felt that Karl Marx was a very good speaker and good at making people believe and feel the same way that he felt.

Funniest or most accurate portrayal:
The best portrayal was how Old Major died in the book after he gave his big speech. During the last decade of Karl Marx life he was very sick but continued giving his speeches and preaching his philosophy until he died.

Tsar Nicholas II was executed on the night of July 17, 1918 along with his wife and children. The bodies were hidden and have only recently been found and identified.

In the book, the author makes him sound like he's drunk all the time and the animals think of him as a "human" which is an enemy to the animals.

The animals think that Mr. Jones is a human and all humans are their enemies. Everyone that walks on two legs is an enemy to them.

Mr.Jones represents Tsar Nicholas II.

Tsar and his family were initially kept as prisoners near St. Petersburg and then transported beyond the Ural Mountains finally ending up in the town of Ekaterinburg in the Spring of 1918. After pressure built up during World War I and his ruling came to an end. Tsar and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks on July 17.

The author portrays Mr.Jones as a drunk and not very well respected. This also shows how he represents Tsar because no one respected him.

The best potrayal was how the animals gathered to rebel against him.

2. Old Major was highly regarded on the farm that everyone was quite ready to lose an hour's sleep in order to hear what he had to say.
3. Old Major was highly respected and the animals waited attentively for him to beging to speak.

I am responding to kurbanov's blog. I think you did a really good job explaining who Karl Marx was in history and how he relates to Old Moses. I agree with the way she explained him relating to the character and she made me see him as "grandpa" as she thought he was, which is one way I didn't think of before! Good job!

I think DJ's is got a really good grasp on the two men, he really points out the similarities of Tsar Nicholas and Mr. Jones and tells why they are similar. The massacring of the family is some what like Mr. Jones killing the animals.

Karl Marx without doubt was one of the most influential socialist thinkers in the 19th century his social economic, and political ideas gained rapid acceptance. Old Major was so highly regarded on the farm that everyone was ready to lose an hour sleep to hear what he had to sleep. They voted on that rats were comrades and put it to a vote and they sang a song.

Karl Marx was a very unique person I have come to find out.

I thought it was a little strange he was recognized on one of his notable ideas as the alienation and the explotation of the worker. That was a little odd for me to grip or understand.

I can definetly see how Old Major represents Karl Marx. Especially in the philosopher part. I got to laughing at some of the thoughts put into Old Major's speech right before he died. For example on page 19, "Remove man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever." I got to laughing at this because now and days most domesticated animals would starve if humans didn't feed them. Especially out in the sandhills. Where would they get their water without traveling for 10 to 20 miles.

In reaction to dandre's comment on Tsar Nicholas II, wow, and who hated or resented these people so much to do those things to them. There come a time when enough is enough. Who killed them and why? I really do like his comment though and I think it is one of the best. I can definitely see how Mr. Jones represents Tsar. Especially how the animals pretty much destroyed everything that reminded them of Jone's family. Kind of like whoever killed the Nicolas family wanted to destroy everything about them it seems like.

Karl Marx was often called the father of communism. After Karl Marx death, he had a great impact on workers movements.

He shows how much of a leader Karl Marx really was. The other animals listen and respect him. The author also tries to potray him as very intelligent and original. As his opinions are well thought out and extremely persuasive.

Marx influenced the workers movements after his death, and just like in Animal Farm befor all the labor laws human workers were treated like animals. With no respect and little pay for their efforts.

1.During the early morning hours of July 17 the Tsar, his wife, children and servants were herded into the cellar of their prison house and executed.
2. The author made Mr. Jones to be hated by the animals in the book, because he was so cruel to them. From the book Mr. Jones had locked up the hen-house but he was to drunk to remember to shut the popholes .
3. Mr. Jones is irresponible to his animals and lets them starve. Czar Nicholas 2 a poor leader. Mr Jones sometimes cruel, beats them with a whip. Czar Nicholas cruel, sometimes brutal with opponents.

I agree with kurbanov. I never thought of Old Major as a grandpa figure but it does seem to fit him quite well.

1. Nicholas II's family was sent to Siberia after he abdicated his throne.

2.The animals are talking about how he only gave them enough food to keep them alive.

3. The animals run Jones off of the farm just like the Tsar was forced to go to Siberia after he abdicated the throne.

The most inclusive and distinguished new way of thinking about social, economic, and political issues was that developed by Karl Marx. Old Major is made up of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Orwell has Old Major inspires the rebellion of the animals even after he dies. So he thinks of him as being a leader and someone that animals want to listen too. They called Karl Marx the “father of communism.” Marx pointed out in is unfinished section on “Alienated Labor” from the Ökonomisch-philosophische Manuskripte aus dem Jahre 1844 that workers are alienated in many ways from their own labor which becomes a resentful need instead of something that they want to do.
He has the vision that the animals should rebel because they are being worked hard with nothing to show for it. Just like how Marx says that workers are alienated because they are made to do something.

Tsar Nicholas II relates himself as a “man of peace” but he was all for the expansion of the Russian Empire.
Orwell does not think to highly of Mr. Jones at this time because he drinks and does not treat the animals very well so they want to revolt.
Orwell shows that Mr. Jones is not good at taking care of his animals anymore and people thought that Tsar Nicholas II was unable to manage a country that was in political turmoil so he was arrested and the animals took over the farm

Old Major introduced the idea of a revolution. In comparison to this, Karl Marx introduced communism to the world. It was a revolutionary idea with unordinary concepts.

Tsar Nicholas II
When I read about Tsar Nicholas II I learned that the people he ruled over kind of resemble the animals hating Mr. Jones. The people took Tsar and his family and held them hostage for some time then they took them and executed them.

Where on the farm, the animals ran Mr. Jones, Mrs. Jones, and his workers off the farm and they never came back, yet.

When you compare the two they are similar in some ways but you really have to look into it.

Tsar Nicholas ll
When I researched Tsar Nicholas ll I inturpreted that he was Similar to Mr. Jones because his people hated him just like the animals hated Mr. Jones. Then Tsar and his family were held hostage by the people until they were executed.

This is similar because the animals got rid of Mr. Jones, Mrs. Jones, and their workers. They ran them off after the workers forgot to feed them and then the rebellion began.

These men were very similar because they didn't run the farm/country the best they could or very well at all and the animals/people hated them.

Karl Marx was very impacting to the people after he passed away. He was like Old Major in the book because everybody always wanted to listen to him. He was very highly respected by everybody. I also agree with Kimberly that he is almost the grandpa figure.

Old Major is representing Karl Marx because before he dies he is highly respected, and after he passes away people still respect him and he has a great impact on him.
